Root Canal refers to a tooth’s hollowed-out cavity where the pulp chamber is located in which the dental pulp exists. The pulp comprises connective tissues, hard & soft tissues like nerves, blood vessels that nourish the teeth. The pulp is responsible for a tooth to feel sensations and moisturizes a tooth’s surrounding structures.
If the teeth cavity is left untreated, it will spread to the pulp chamber. In such cases, the connective tissues around the tooth will be compromised. Later, the tooth will become loose and eventually come out. Root Canal Therapy (RCT) or Endodontic treatment is necessary when oral bacteria attack the pulp chamber.
RCT increases the chances of preserving a severely decaying tooth, eliminating the need for extraction.
Root Canal Treatment involves 3 steps:
When a tooth is pulled out surgically, it will affect the neighbouring teeth as time passes. It will lead to disharmony in the teeth in the dental spacing, making the teeth move and eventually causing crowding and teeth alignment problems. The best method to avoid such adverse consequences is getting dental implant treatments that are quite costly.
In contrast, Root Canal Treatment secures the natural tooth, surrounding gums, and underlying bone. Moreover, RCT has high success rates. So you can secure your natural tooth whilst the teeth alignment is preserved affordably with Endodontic treatment.
The structural integrity of a tooth is already compromised as the bacterial invasion has progressed to the tooth's anatomic space within the root. During RCT, dentists must remove some enamel and dentin to access the tooth's interior regions. Likely, the fluid equipped to clean the root canal has some acidic components.
Moreover, the tooth does not contain dental pulp to nourish after RCT. All these things will weaken the tooth to a certain extent.
Don't worry. Endodontists will not leave the root-canaled tooth intact. If they find the tooth is more brittle, a metal post will be added to reinforce it. Moreover, crowning the tooth with a dental cap strengthens the tooth like before it was infected.
Few people believe that RCT will increase the likelihood of developing serious diseases like cancer.
It is a myth that arises from certain improperly designed research done years ago. Dental experts revealed that there is no link between endodontic therapy and developing bodily disorders. Moreover, there is a proven fact that people who received multiple RCT procedures have 45% reduced risk of cancer.
Root canal procedure is not painful as many people think. Thanks to the advancements in dentistry, It is performed under local anaesthesia so the patient will not sense any pain during the procedure. Once the numbing agent wears down, there will be mild discomforts like soreness, but they exist for 24 to 48 hours only after RCT.
Diabetes can impair the function of the mouth's blood vessels, nerves, and dental tissues. Hence, excessive blood sugar levels can negatively affect dental procedures.
Luckily, RCT can be performed for diabetic patients with necessary precautionary measures. Following the procedure, the patient should take antibiotics and consume nutritious, sugar-free foods to stabilize blood sugar levels. It helps in averting root canal reinfections.
Endodontic treatments typically require 1 to 2 dental visits. Each visit does not take more than 2 hours. You might need 2 to 3 dental visits if your infection is severe.
Whether it is an impairment in your teeth or tissues inside your mouth, you should treat them immediately without delay. If you skip or postpone dental treatments, the deterioration will progress and If you skip or postpone dental treatments, the infection will progress. Consequently, you should need invasive procedures to safeguard diseased teeth.
For instance, dental fillings are enough to treat cavities in the initial stage. If you do not get it done promptly, the infection will reach the root canal, so you should get endodontic treatments. If RCT is neglected, the cavity will eventually spread to the tooth root, leaving you with no other option than to extract the tooth.
