Dental implants are small titanium screws inserted surgically into the jaw bone to replace the roots of missing teeth. The jaw bone will be integrated with the implant and support the custom-fabricated replacement tooth that functions like a natural tooth.

Dental implant is an excellent option for those seeking a long-term solution to restore their missing teeth.

What are the advantages of dental implants over dentures and dental bridges?

You cannot enjoy long-term benefits with dentures or dental bridges. While restoring a tooth with a bridge, there is a need to adjust the nearby tooth. Likely, denture teeth need a lot of maintenance. However, they need help with eating and make pronouncing some words difficult.

Apart from durability, the implant teeth are recommended for their myriad of advantages as follows:

  • No need to adjust the neighboring teeth to fix replacement teeth (like crowns).
  • Implant teeth can restore the biting strength and chewing forces.
  • Dental implants bring back your beautiful smile.
  • There will be no speech impediments.
  • No need to take it off your mouth before going to sleep.

As dental implants function like natural teeth, they take care of reviving the functionalities of a tooth. So you don't have to worry about bone resorption in the jaw, which is inevitable in replacing a missing tooth with dentures or dental bridges. Moreover, the titanium posts offer protection from bone and gum disease.

  • Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all of the teeth in an upper or lower jaw. They can also be used to hold dentures or bridges in place.

  • Dental Implants

    Single tooth implant

A single tooth implant is a dental implant that replaces only one lost tooth. A single tooth implant surgery is usually done in two stages. The implant is inserted into the jawbone during the first stage. The abutment and crown are joined to the implant in the second stage.

People who desire a permanent and natural-looking tooth replacement solution may consider single tooth implants. They are also an excellent choice for patients who have lost a tooth due to trauma or gum disease.

Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day to care for a single tooth implant. You should also visit your dentist on a regular basis for checkups and cleanings. A single tooth implant can last for many years if properly cared for.

  • Multi-tooth implants

Multi-tooth implants are dental implants that replace two or more missing teeth. They are a long-term treatment that resembles natural teeth in appearance and feel.

Multiple tooth implants can be used to replace:

    1. Two or three missing teeth in a row
    2. Several missing teeth around the mouth
    3. All teeth in a single arch

The implant, the abutment, and the crown are the same three components that make up single tooth implants. Multi-tooth implants, on the other hand, may necessitate more than one implant to support the prosthetic teeth.

Multi-tooth implants have several advantages over conventional tooth replacement methods, such dental bridges and dentures.

    1. They are more long-lasting and can last for many years.
    2. They improve the appearance of your smile and make eating and speaking simpler.
    3. They aid in the preservation of your jawbone's health.
    4. They are more stable and pleasant than dentures or bridges.

    Full mouth dental implants

Full mouth dental implants are a form of dental implant that replaces all of the teeth in one or both arches of the mouth. They are a long-term treatment that looks and feels like natural teeth.

Full mouth dental implants, on the other hand, may necessitate as many as 12 to 16 implants per arch to support the replacement teeth. Full mouth dental implants are suitable for most people who have good overall health and healthy gums.

Full mouth dental implants provide several advantages over conventional tooth replacement solutions like dentures and bridges. If you are thinking about getting full mouth dental implants, talk to your dentist about the risks and benefits.

  • Can children get dental implants?

Yes. Age helps people get dental implants.

Like young and middle-aged adults, kids and people in their late adulthood also get implants. Dentists could replace the missing tooth with implants if a kid lost a permanent tooth due to injury or bacterial infections.

However, implant surgery for children is performed if their facial growth has been completed. The orofacial development is completed by age 16 for females and 18 for males.

  • What can provide the greatest risk for dental implants?

Albeit implant teeth are robust and cannot be invaded by harmful microorganisms in the mouth, some conditions and habits harm implant survival.

    1. Smoking - Cigarettes and other tobacco products contain strong chemicals that can interfere with an implant's ability to osseointegrate with the jaw bone.
    2. Diabetes – People with uncontrolled sugar levels also develop impaired osseointegration. Likely, it will lead to an implant-related infectious condition called "Peri-implantitis".
    3. Allergies - Titanium is biocompatible, but some people have allergic reactions to this metal. In such cases, their body will turn down the implant. Therefore, informing the dentist about any such disorders or allergy situations before getting implants is better.

  • Is it possible to get dental implants with gum diseases?

Healthy tissues in the gums are inevitable to insert the implant posts successfully. In general, untreated gum diseases will lead to bone loss so that the implant teeth become loose and eventually disintegrate from the bone.

To avoid such consequences, dentists treat periodontal diseases irrespective of the degree of infection before inserting implant posts.

  • How do dentists replace a missing tooth through dental implants?

Replacing a tooth or multiple teeth with implants begins with a mini-surgical procedure. However, it is not painful, so don't worry. Dental implant treatments primarily involve the following steps:

    1. Placing the implant – The implant doctor would open the gum flap with a scalpel under local anaesthesia. Then a drill is made in place of the missing tooth to insert implant posts (titanium screws). Then, the incision in the gums is stitched.
    2. Osseointegration – The titanium screw gets integrated into the bone and becomes stabilized. It forms the tooth's root portion. This process is called Osseointegration, and it takes around 3 months. This duration, called healing period, varies for each person depending on bone health.
    3. Placing abutment – When dentists find that the implant post is completely fused with the bone, they place an abutment on the implant and fix it with a screw. The abutment is a connector that links up the inserted implant and the replacement teeth going to be placed.
    4. Placement of the replacement tooth – A custom-made prosthesis (or) Replacement teeth (crowns, dentures, or dental bridges) is fabricated after taking impressions. Then, the prosthesis is cemented or screwed onto the abutment.

  • How long does the dental implant treatment take?

Generally, implant dentistry treatments will take 3 to 8 months to complete. Meanwhile, the treatment duration varies for each case with respect to factors like bone growth rate, patients' habits, oral hygiene routine, etc.

On the other hand, the treatment duration will elongate if placing the implant teeth mandates supporting treatments like bone grafting.

Can dental implants procedure be done in one day?

Yes. Getting implant teeth in a day is our Zenith Dentistry's viable solution. Unlike traditional implants, you don't have to wait months to integrate the implant with the bone. Such same-day dental implants also work effectively as regular dental implants.

Generally, the same day implants are prescribed for non-smokers and people with healthy bones in their jaw. It is not a suitable dental restoration solution for gum disease patients, smokers, bruxers, autoimmune disease patients, and people with certain chronic illnesses.

  • What are the important care guidelines to be followed after getting dental implants?

Although the implants are robust and durable, you should care for them like your natural teeth. Apart from post-operative instructions, the implant care guidelines are extended to your day-to-day oral activities to a certain extent as follows:

    • Use a soft nylon toothbrush to clean your teeth
    • Avoid sticky food items
    • Avoid hard foods
    • Use flossing wire or an interdental brush to clean the space between your implant teeth
    • Get periodical consultations from your dentist
